for everyone

As you know, Sirius came to live with us a while back (seems like he's always been here now), and we have two other dogs. I'm not a crazy dog person, but I do enjoy my dogs and I enjoy well-trained dogs generally.

I started watching "Dog Whisperer" on National Geographic Channel, and I'm hooked. Cesar Millan has to be the most intelligent dog trainer I've ever seen. When you actually look at what he does, it's nothing revolutionary. It's common sense. But he explains it so well, he breaks it all down and puts it all back together again, and it just plain WORKS.

Using his methods, Sirius no longer freaks out when people leave. He walks to heel, and has learned that he has to have permission to go out the door. He's also eating when I want him to, which has stopped the problem with the cat food and consequent arguments with them.

If you haven't seen the show, and you like dogs, or even if you just like watching awesome things happen with animals generally, I heartily recommend it. 5pm EST weeknights.

(It doesn't hurt that Cesar is very acceptable eye candy either)

Oh I love this show too. My boys actually started watching it and turned me on to it. He is fabulous, and yeah... the eye candy part is nice too. What amazes me is the stupidity of some people... but then, he is to dogs, what Nanny 911 is to kids..

You're absolutely right. Although I haven't actually watched the Nanny shows. Rhiannon warned me not to. She said it would just make me angry. And my friend who is a dog expert can't watch Cesar for the same reason. It's the dog owners that make her angry, juist as it's the parents who would make me angry on Nanny shows. I haven't raised 6 kids without knowing a thing or too, and I'm afraid I'm very, very impatient and intolerant with ineffective parents. You must feel the same way.

Yes, exactly. I can't watch a whole "nanny" show.. I just want to smack the parents into next week.

Cesar is an excellent human trainer. And he groks dogs, too.

I'm glad to hear that Sirius is a "balanced dog" now!

Human trainer, aye, that he is. I wish he could do it with cats.............

Glad ydour dog has fit right in. I have caught a few episodes and I will have to watch more for when we get a second dog. Carson, came so well trained and well socialized we have been lucky.

I think the only thing you can train a cat to do is....hummm ummm welll NOTHING!

My cats are trained to follow a person into the kitchen, and to run away when I grab the spray bottle when they are eating my plants.

heh *grin*

Actually I have had all my cats trained. My dad used to raise hunting dogs (very well behaved ones I might add). My cats have been trained to do tricks (sit, speak, roll over, shake, sit up pretty, stand up pretty, heel). I've also trained them to not scratch furniture or carpets. Neither cat was trained as a kitten and both behaved as I wanted them to. I must admit that my current companion is not trained as he was 5-6 years old by the time I got him but I have stopped some of his worst habits from being allowed to do whatever he wanted in his first home. The cats I've fully trained have been from 6 months to 2 years old. It is harder when they've lived with another person and had little if any expectations as to behavior. Takes lots of attention and lots of time but I learned how watching my dad train our puppy when I was in high school. The first cat was easy to train as he was smart and competing with the puppy for treats and attention. The second one was more difficult partly because it was almost ferrel when I got it.

"End of my leash" is a good one too. I really am not a dog person (and usually dislike them quite a bit), but he trains the families in the same way. I think it is on W channel.
